WALK NOTES

Mow Cop Castle - Old Man Of Mow - Nick i' th' Hill - Castle Farm - Brook House - Upper Hulme Farm - Macclesfield Canal - Ackers Crossing - South Cheshire Way - Old Man Of Mow - Mow Cop Castle

My walk today started in the village of Mow Cop situated on an escarpment on the Staffordshire Cheshire border near Biddulph. As I drove towards Mow Cop I came across the Trig Point on the Staffordhire Way. Great views from here. Also great views from the castle and from the Old Man of Mow. Tte Old Man is a huge stone 65ft (20m) high and stands 1,100ft (335m) above sea level. It is situated on the site of a cairn that is thought to have been an ancient burial mound. The cairn has been reduced to its present slimline status by years of quarrying. It may have ben used to raise large slabs of gritstone or as a reminder of the original cairn. The castle at Mow Cop is actually a folly built in 1746 by Randle Wilbraham I of Rode Hall as a summerhouse.
